UAE Says It Intercepted Majority of Iranian Missiles and Drones as Regional Tensions Escalate.

The Ministry of Defense of the United Arab Emirates has announced that Iran has launched 165 ballistic missiles and 541 explosive drones toward Emirati territory since the beginning of the latest wave of regional tensions, marking one of the most intense aerial confrontations the Gulf state has faced in its modern history.

In a written statement published on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, the ministry detailed what it described as a sustained and coordinated campaign targeting the country’s airspace. The statement provided the first comprehensive breakdown of the scale of the attacks and the effectiveness of the UAE’s defensive response.

Missile Interceptions and Aerial Defense

According to the ministry, 152 of the 165 ballistic missiles were intercepted mid air by the country’s air defense systems. The remaining 13 missiles fell into the sea before reaching populated areas. Officials did not specify whether those missiles were diverted intentionally or failed to reach their intended targets, but emphasized that none struck critical infrastructure directly.

The drone threat proved more complex. Of the 541 drones that entered Emirati airspace, 506 were intercepted and destroyed before reaching their objectives. Thirty five drones managed to evade interception, causing structural damage in several locations across the country. Authorities did not immediately disclose the precise sites affected, citing security considerations.

Debris from intercepted missiles and drones also fell in various parts of the country, leading to what officials described as limited material damage. Emergency response teams were deployed rapidly to secure affected areas and ensure public safety.

The figures suggest that the UAE succeeded in neutralizing the overwhelming majority of incoming projectiles. Still, the attacks underscore the evolving nature of modern warfare in the region, where unmanned aerial systems and ballistic technology increasingly define the battlefield.

Casualties and Civilian Impact

Casualty numbers released by the government confirm three fatalities and 58 injuries. Officials stated that all those killed and injured were foreign nationals, the majority originating from Southeast Asian countries. The UAE is home to a large expatriate workforce, particularly in construction and service sectors, making civilian safety a critical concern during times of conflict.

The government has not disclosed the nationalities of the victims, but said support is being provided to families and that medical care for the injured remains ongoing.

In its statement, the Ministry of Defense stressed that the armed forces remain in a state of full defensive readiness. Military units have heightened surveillance operations and reinforced air defense batteries across key strategic locations.

Security experts note that the UAE has invested heavily over the past decade in advanced missile defense systems capable of intercepting both short range ballistic missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles. The latest figures indicate that these systems performed with a high interception rate.

However, the fact that dozens of drones penetrated defensive lines and caused damage highlights the difficulty of fully sealing national airspace against large scale saturation attacks. Drones, often smaller and lower flying than missiles, can be harder to detect and intercept, especially when deployed in high numbers.

The announcement comes amid broader regional instability, with tensions between Iran and several Gulf states escalating sharply in recent weeks. Analysts say the attacks appear designed to send a strategic message to countries perceived as aligned with Western security frameworks.
